A Brief History

In 1895, the first Chris Corrigan worked as a local fireman in the Central Falls, Rhode Island community. The Corrigan family had come to Central Falls, RI from Ireland, stopping first in Michigan after riding down the St. Lawrence Seaway. The city of Central Falls was newly created by a special vote in 1895– which had plenty of mill workers flooding in. As times were changing in the new century, our great-great grandfather noticed a need, and used horse & wagon to offer assistance lifting and transporting heavy items— specifically caskets.

During this time, funeral parlors were uncommon and people were waked in their homes. Urban areas such as Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, etc. contained multi-family homes with 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors…without an elevator in sight. Chris Corrigan noticed a need to help neighbors with installing rigging systems and hoisting caskets and heavy furniture through windows and safely to the sidewalk…which is how Chris Corrigan Moving came to be. As you can see, being a helpful neighbor is at the core of our business ethos. Through the 20th century items got heavier and buildings became taller, but Chris Corrigan found solutions at every turn.

STARTED WITH HORSE ‘N BUGGY, NOW WE’RE HERE

Officially established in 1900, Chris’s concept evolved throughout the 20th century as needs changed and people migrated from urban areas to spacious suburbs. The foundations our fathers built before us allowed each father and son to focus on preparing for what’s next. Expertise and wisdom was passed down for 120 years allowing the current owner and operator to focus on the future after an inaugural decade gaining on-site experience on the trucks. We are incredibly proud of our family’s history and the business we have built and sustained to honor the heavy-lifting of those that came and carried before.
